At 8:02 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, 1981, the Pawtucket (Rhode Island) Red Sox and the Rochester (New York) Red Wings began a Triple-A International League game that would run until 4:09 the following morning—Easter Sunday, as it happened—when umpires suspended the game at the end of the 32nd inning, with the score tied 2–2 and 19 fans remaining in McCoy Stadium. Taken up again on June 23, the next time the teams met in Pawtucket, it was resolved in 18 minutes and one inning, 3–2 in favor of the Red Sox. With a total running time of eight hours and 25 minutes, the game remains the longest professional baseball game on record.

Because we believe in the power of good, here are 3 ways to add some good into the world through photography.

1) 100 Cameras empowers kids through photography.

2) Help Portrait provides portraits to people who might not otherwise be able to get one.

3) Photo Philanthropy links up photographers with nonprofits to drive social change.

Know of another organization? Add it in a reply below!

As far as photography jobs go, it doesn’t get much better than being the personal photographer to the President of the United States. During his tenure in that position, Jacques Lowe amassed an archive of over 40,000 negatives.

Tragically, all but 1,500 of the remaining negatives in storage were destroyed during the attacks on 9/11. A team of seven imaging specialists spent 600 hours restoring the photographs, which are now on display in New York.

The start of this baseball season has been pretty spectacular. We’ve already had a two-homer game from Bryce Harper, a shutout and game-winning home run from Clayton Kershaw, a nearly perfect game from Yu Darvish, but my favorite moment of the four day old season happened last night in Atlanta.

Evan Gattis came up to bat in the fourth inning against Roy Halladay, this being the same Evan Gattis who struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and who wandered around the midwest for four years bouncing from janitor jobs to ski lift operators while trying to find himself before eventually returning baseball. And on a 1-1 pitch, Gattis sent the ball flying just over the cusp of the left field wall, all while his Dad was currently being interviewed in the stands.

It was Gattis’ second career at-bat and first career home run. For a guy whose career path was “Ski Lift Operator Manager” just a few years ago, that’s one hell of an ending.

MLB hasn’t allowed the clip for embedding yet, so click through to check it out.

As a new season of Major League Baseball begins, one photographer focuses on baseballs past — that is, baseballs that have lain dormant well after their last pitch.

For years, photographer Don Hamerman walked his dog near an old baseball diamond in Stamford, Conn. And in all different seasons, in all kinds of weather, Hamerman picked up old baseballs.

He brought them back to his studio, where they sat around for years until he finally decided to start photographing them in 2005.

Hamerman, who hasn’t been to a ballgame in 10 years, admits that he cares more about aesthetics than history. He says he doesn’t even know what baseballs are made of — he just loves the way they look.
